The Driver Supervisor (DS) Certification Program is a post‑licensing initiative designed for the heavy vehicle sector. Funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) through the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), the program has been developed by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Australia (CILTA).
This certification is intended for experienced drivers, trainers, and mentors who support and assess licensed heavy vehicle drivers beyond their initial licensing. Because current licensing pathways can produce varying levels of real‑world driving competency, the DS Certification Program helps close this gap by equipping qualified individuals to mentor and assess drivers through a structured post‑licensing assessment process.
Certified Driver Supervisors are authorised to deliver the Driver Supervisor Assessment, a post‑licensing assessment developed specifically for use by certified supervisors within industry. The program has been shaped through extensive consultation with experienced trainers and instructors who have long been performing driver supervision and mentoring roles.
Eligibility requirements:
To apply, you must:
- Have held a heavy vehicle licence for at least three years at the same or higher class than the drivers you will assess
- Be able to couple/uncouple a trailer, reverse a vehicle, and change a wheel
- Commit to minimum Driver Supervisor hours and staying current with new heavy vehicle technologies
How to Become a Certified Driver Supervisor
Becoming a Driver Supervisor involves three clear steps:
1. Apply to become an Approved Driver Supervisor
You must complete the Driver Supervisor Application Form and upload all required supporting documents for review by the Certification Committee. Access application here.
2. Enrol in the Assessment Microcredential
Once your application is approved, enrol in the Driver Supervisor Assessment Microcredential. Registration fee: $350 + GST. Enrol course and begin here.
- Complete the Assessments
- Work through each module and complete the quiz at the end of every module.
- Complete a final assessment of 34 multiple‑choice questions, requiring a minimum pass mark of 85%.
- Download Certificate of Completion
- Your certificate will be available for download once all course requirements are successfully completed.
3. Become a Certified Driver Supervisor and Start Assessing Heavy Vehicle Drivers
Participants who meet all requirements will be:
- Issued a Driver Supervisor identity card
- Registered as Certified Driver Supervisors and added to the National Driver Supervisor Course Registry
- Granted access to the Driver Supervisor Post‑Licensing Driver Assessment to begin assessing heavy vehicle drivers.
Eligible individuals may then apply to practise as a Driver Supervisor.
